Heal your gut and hormonal imbalances with coaching and nutrition
Are you between ages 30-65 and suffering from gut or hormone imbalances that have gone untreated for months or even years?
I get it because I have been in your situation – and it’s not a nice place to be.
It can feel lonely, embarrassing and frustrating living with the symptoms of an unhealthy gut, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or hormone imbalance (symptoms like gas, bloating, foggy brain, constipation, diarrhoea or heartburn).
There could also be other health issues such as stress, hair loss, an auto-immune dynamic, headaches, eczema, low energy, lack of libido, dry skin, brittle nails and poor sleep.
Overall, you just don’t feel good. You know something is not right but you’ve been to see so many medical practitioners and nothing has helped or worked.
As a health coach with a functional medicine approach, at Nurture Your Life, my mission is to educate, coach and empower you to reclaim your health and well-being. I do this by supporting you with a customised approach to your unique hormone and gut health challenges. I use a set of tools that formalise both history-taking and mapping symptoms to puzzle-piece them into the categories of root processes of the illness.
Let me share my story with you
In late 1998, I was living in the UK, working full-time as a teacher, in an unhealthy relationship and I was the main breadwinner.
My stress levels were extremely high and my beautiful, thick mane of hair started to fall out. It was awful and I was so distressed at the idea of going bald. I would often cry when I washed my hair because so much fell out. Some days I couldn’t even face going to work.
I felt isolated and alone.
I tried everything, determined to find the root cause
I started researching hair loss and read an informative book by Philip Kingsley called “Hair: An Owner’s Handbook”.
It was by reading this book I realised stress was triggering my hormones into responding with, what was commonly known then as, “male pattern baldness” resulting in hair loss.
My doctor referred me to the only Trichologist in the North West of England and he interviewed me at length. He helped me understand the lifestyle changes I needed to make, although he did not have any anti-androgenic topical products to offer at that time.
I started to change my lifestyle… and my health improved
Fast forward to August 1999 and I had moved to live and work in Hong Kong.
The hair loss was still a problem, yet I had made some massive changes.
I started a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement formulated for hair health, ended the relationship that was not working for me and I had found a great Trichologist in Hong Kong who began using anti-androgenic topical treatments, scalp massage and complementary shampoo and conditioners.
The results I experienced were life-changing.
Over the next six months, my hair loss stabilised and regrowth from hair follicles that had “gone to sleep” woke up and started to grow again. Within 18 months, I no longer needed any further treatment and my hair has been healthy ever since.
This experience taught me to always find the root cause of any dis-ease in the body and to never underestimate the impact of stress, as well as the body’s innate power to heal itself when given the right treatment and care.
Treating the root cause of my Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
In 2013, I started having crazy heart palpitations, I was feeling exhausted and had a foggy brain. I wasn’t able to remember people’s names (I’ve always had an amazing memory).
Intuitively, I felt there was a hormone imbalance, yet doctors told me that was “rubbish”. Based on my health coaching training and my own research I demanded a full thyroid panel, including thyroid antibodies.
I took these results for a third opinion to a doctor I felt would see the truth and give me the right medication, she did and my heart palpitations stopped within three days!
I continued to educate myself about thyroid health and realised there are many root causes of this condition. A large percentage of people with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis have gut dysbiosis in the form of SIBO and I eventually found out that I did too. I refused to take antibiotics choosing the Biphasic Diet plan and antimicrobials guided by a naturopath. This takes 4-6 months. I am seven weeks into my journey as we write and eczema I’d had for almost five years cleared up by day 18, so watch this space!
"What I appreciate most about Helen is the time and care she took to understand me and my needs before the session. It wasn’t like walking up to a nutritionist or doctor and relying on their knowledge on the subject, this was someone who had taken the time to study my health and particulars as well. During the ‘Health History session’, Helen was extremely knowledgeable and approachable and I received various ‘aha’ moments. Finally, she took the time to follow up on all the points mentioned during the session and offer me tangible solutions that I can implement to move forward with my nutrition and health. Thank you Helen!”
